Reverse souvenirs
9/1/2024
We magicians tend to think that our (whatever) trick in which the participant signs a card or draws something on a piece of paper, is such a significant event in their lives that they want to keep the thing left-over from the trick, as a souvenir to show it to their future grand children.
Most likely the souvenir will be felt as a nuisance, and the moment of having to take it awkward; and after the performance, the item will most likely find it's way into the nearest trash can.
What I have started to do recently, only if I have had a good connection with the people I've been performing for, is that when we are left with a signed card, I say this to them:
"Do you mind if I keep this? I have a frame on the wall at home where I put all the cards that are signed, so I can remember all the moments and the people I have performed magic for."
Maybe, and I don't know know for certain, you stating that the moment with the participants is special enough for you that you want to remember it, in the best scenario, they will mirror your sentiment, and think that meeting you is something special to remember.
Of course, I don't really have such a frame, on the wall, at home. Their signed card will end up in a box somewhere at the back of a cabinet drawer (you never know if you end up needing it). And yes, don't do this with people who will visit your home.
