Can you play the guitar?

19/1/2024

When magicians keep saying that magic is a difficult hobby, I don't know if I should laugh or cry.

I mean, you can buy a thump tip and amaze everybody you see with five minutes of practice.

With all the marketed tricks, you can show miracles in no time, with almost zero effort. Your wallet is the only thing holding you back.

Try this with any other hobby. When you pick up the guitar for the first time, after thirty minutes of practice, gather around your friends and family, then try to even play a simple riff. Not gonna happen. There's no self-working songs.

Magic by it's nature, can be a no effort, low investment - high returns hobby. I don't know if there are some other hobbies in which you can get so much for so little.

Take ten tennis lessons or ten piano lessons, not enough to even get the basics down. Buy ten magic tricks from the dealer. Presto. You're a wizard Harry.

You can fumble through your performance, using bad technique, while parroting the provided "script", and still people will be somewhat mystified. Not because of you, but because of of the trick.

What this means is that, there are a lot of magicians who have put so little actual effort to their craft, that even after many years, they can, figuratively, barely play the guitar.

Perfoming great magic might be hard, but showing people silly little tricks is not. Let's not fool ourselves.

P.S. Can you play the guitar?

If not, maybe it's time start learning the chords.
